Keyboard shortcuts & workspace limits

Ctrl / ⌘ + Enter runs the primary action. Ctrl / ⌘ + F searches the focused editor. Ctrl / ⌘ + Z undoes; add Shift to redo. Tab moves focus. Esc restores the expanded workspace.

Up to 10 MiB UTF-8 input, 128 nesting levels, and 32 Mi characters of output. The tree preview shows at most 2,000 nodes with bounded text. Syntax highlighting is disabled above one million characters; documents above 250,000 characters run on request. Export before reloading: documents are kept in memory, not saved.

THE PRACTICAL GUIDE

Make nested JSON easier to read and review

Beautifier focuses on how JSON reads in the editor. It combines pretty printing with display controls such as indentation and line wrapping for long values.

When should you use it?

  • Read long string values on a narrow screen.
  • Choose an indentation style for a shared example.
  • Examine a deeply nested document without altering its data.
WORKED EXAMPLE

Example: read a long value

Line wrapping can display the string across visual lines; it does not insert newlines into the exported JSON.

Input
{"description":"A long value that may extend beyond the width of your screen"}
Formatted result
{
  "description": "A long value that may extend beyond the width of your screen"
}

Indentation and line wrapping solve different problems

Indentation shows where objects and arrays begin and end. Visual wrapping makes long strings fit the editor width. A wrapped line is still one source line unless the JSON contains an escaped newline. This distinction matters when you copy a stack trace, a description, or a message whose exact text must survive the export.

Read a large response in smaller pieces

Start with the outer keys, then inspect one branch at a time. Beautifying a document helps reveal nesting, but a long record array can remain cumbersome even with good indentation. Open the tree to follow a branch or the table viewer to compare rows. If you only need the document to occupy fewer bytes, use Minifier after your review rather than reducing indentation by hand.

AT THE WORKBENCH

Tune the layout for the reader.

Beautifying and formatting both change whitespace. This workspace starts with line wrapping enabled and focuses on reading long values and selecting an indentation style that fits your screen.

  1. Load dense JSON

    Start with an API response or the sample document.

  2. Adjust the reading layout

    Compare two spaces, four spaces, or tabs; toggle long-line wrapping.

  3. Keep your preferred layout

    Indentation and wrapping are remembered on this device.

IN PRACTICE

How do I read a long JSON string on a narrow screen?

Load the document into Beautifier, turn on visual line wrapping, and choose indentation that exposes the nesting. A long string can occupy several display lines while remaining one JSON string in the exported result. This is useful for log messages, descriptions, and embedded text.

JSON: a long value stays one string

json
{"event":{"message":"A long description can wrap visually without gaining a newline character in the exported JSON.","level":"info"}}

Wrapping is an editor display preference. It does not insert a literal newline into message or change its length.

Both create readable indentation. Beautifier emphasizes reading controls such as wrapping; Formatter emphasizes producing a separate pretty-printed copy. Neither operation validates an application schema.

BEFORE YOU USE THE RESULT

What should you check before using the result?

The tool changes presentation, not values or property order. If the input is malformed, inspect the Validator or Repair page before beautifying it.

Wrapping does not change the JSON

Visual line wrapping lets a long string fit the editor width without inserting characters into it. The downloaded document contains the formatted JSON, not extra newlines introduced by the display.

Choose an indentation style

Two spaces keep deeply nested structures compact. Four spaces make shallow nesting more prominent. Tabs allow a tab-based style without substituting spaces. Beautification does not shorten strings, repair errors, or change numeric values.
